 This exciting music project connects leading professional improvising musicians from across Europe; The Crossing Borders Project fosters intercultural appreciation, understanding, and co-operation through varied styles of music and improvised music performance. Formed in 2013, the project’s core members are Norwegian based Guitarist/Composer Phil McDermott, Drummer/Percussionist Kevin Brady - Ireland and acclaimed saxophonist/composer Heinrich Von KalneinAustria.


The Crossing Borders ensemble draws upon a wide range of musical influences from their respective countries and the jazz music tradition. Effectively embellishing their repertoire by working with different bass players & varied stylistic instrumentalists from each of their countries such as: Dave Redmond – Ireland, Peter Herbert – Austria & Magnus Rod Haugland from Norway.


Critically acclaimed Brady/Kalnein/McDermott embrace the genres of World beats, free improvisation, classical and the jazz tradition. Their artistic goals are to compose and perform music that will engage them & their audience.


Creative music contributes to social and emotional growth. It is an invaluable channel for the process of inter-cultural dialogue, communication and collaboration. This group’s aims & musical goals are to do just that....

Heinrich Von Kalnein – Austria


Born on July 4, 1960 saxophonist / flautist Heinrich von Kalnein is one of the most high- profile jazz artists of today’s Austrian and German scene. After graduating with honors from the University of Music Graz, Austria in 1987 he continued his studies with David Liebman & Oliver Lake. He developed a very distinct musical profile by taking his melodic concept and jazz roots into the realm of worldbeat, free improv. and electronic music. In the 90's he toured extensively in Europe with his own HvK Group (feat. ACT Recording Artist French guitarist Nguyên Lê) as well as with the Indo-Jazz World Music Project - Free Winds’ (feat. Shakti’s Selvaganesh Vinayakram).

He currently works as the musical producer and member of the Vienna Art Orchestra who perform worldwide. Currently based in Graz, he also holds the position as Professor for Saxophone studies at the Jazz institute of the University of Music Graz KUG. Recent Performances have included luminaries of the improvised music scene such as: Iain Ballamy, Django Bates, Bob Brookmeyer, Jay Clayton, Gil Evans, Doug Hammond, Marc Johnson, Sheila Jordan, Nguyên Lê, Charlie Mariano, Bob Mintzer, Wolfgang Muthspiel, Ed Neumeister, Marc Ribot, Paquito d'Rivera and the Austrian National Public Radio symphony.

Phil McDermott – Norway


Born in Dublin, Ireland in July 1974. Phil showed a keen interest in Jazz by winning first place at the prestigious annual cultural festival in Dublin “Feis Ceoil” three years running. Though largely self-taught his obvious talent was developed by David O’Rourke. Learning fast he went on to impressing Dublin audiences sharing the stage with players such as Louis StewartJim Doherty, John Wadham, Richie Buckley Noel Kelehan.


Philip moved to Norway in 2002. He studied at the University Of Stavanger where he holds a Master degree in music performance. He released his first solo album in 2010 entitled ‘NOW’ featuring one of Norway’s leading saxophonists Tore Brunburg. He performs regularly at jazz festivals throughout Norway & Denmark. He has collaborated with Scandinavian musicians such as: Stein Inge Brækhus, Tor Ytredal, Erlend Slettevoll, Svein Folkvord, and Heinrich Von Kalnein. Other musicians from England / Scotland / USA have included Bobby Wellins, Jim Mullen, Laurence Cottle, Jack Wilkins, Paul Langosch. His style and compositions have developed out of the contemporary, primary American jazz tradition. But since his move to Scandinavia he has been inspired by a lot of the European jazz scene His style and compositions have developed out of the contemporary, primary American jazz tradition. Kevin Brady – Ireland


            Kevin Brady is a critically acclaimed drummer/producer from Ireland who has been performing professionally for 20 years. After studying classical piano and trumpet from an early age, his interest in drums began at 19, first at Newpark Music Centre. He later attended the Drummers Collective in New York, where his teachers were Kim Plainfield and Bobby Sanabrias; more recently he finished studying in Havana, Cuba, with Jose Eladio. Previous teachers have included Jeff Ballard, Matt Wilson, Ben Perowsky, Ralph Peterson, Elliot Zigmund and Keith Copeland.

He achieved a Diploma in jazz performance from the Guildhall School of Music in London and received a Scholarship to Berklee College of Music in Boston, USA. In recent years he has performed with International jazz musicians such as: Norma Winstone, Ronnie Cuber, Ian Shaw, Guy Barker, Bobby Watson, Ulf Wakenius. On the home front he has worked with Van Morrison and leading jazz guitarist Louis Stewart and Choice Award nominee singer Dave Geraghty (BellX1) and The Irish Baroque Orchestra. He has performed at many of the World's renowned venues like the Sydney Opera House, Ronnie Scotts, the Pizza Express – London & Leading music festivals in India, South Africa, Australia, Japan, Mexico, China & throughout Europe In 2008, he was invited to represent Ireland in the European Jazz Colors Jazz Orchestra in Italy. He is a signed recording artist with the Fresh Sounds New Talent Record label releasing two well-received albums as a leader, which features the innovative U.S. pianist Bill Carrothers. He is currently an endorsed artist with the Bosphorus Cymbal Company & Evans Drumheads.

Dave Redmond - Double Bass


Redmond began playing electric bass at the age of 16. He attended the Newpark Music Centre, in Dublin, where he studied double-bass He received an Associate in Jazz Double Bass Performance, awarded by the London Guildhall School of Music and Drama. He has also studied in New York with Steve Coleman, Ravi Coltrane, Vijay Iyer, Don Byron and other leading jazz musicians. In 2005, he studied in New York with bassist Drew Gress and in 2007 with Ben Allison.


Redmond has performed with visiting artists such as Bob Dorough, Bill Keith Copeland, Dave Liebman, Jason Rigby, Bobby Wellins, Guy Barker, Ian Shaw, Scott Hamilton and Jim Mullen. He has performed at numerous festivals and clubs throughout the world, among them Ronnie Scotts, Pizza Express (London), Euro Jazz Fest (Mexico), Dubai and Abu Dhabi and Switzerland, Hungary and Spain with the Contemporary Klezmer Ensemble Yurodny. Currently he performs regularly with The Kevin Brady Trio featuring the U.S. pianist Bill Carrothers. Redmond has recently released his first solo album as a leader with the Fresh Sounds New Talent record label entitled ‘ ROOTS’.
